Breakfast at The Mossy Well, Muswell Hill

Walk up and down “The Broadway” (as Muswell Hill locals have it) and you might sense something missing.  Yes – the pubs.  Where are the pubs?  Making up for this scarcity and, overcoming some local opposition, JD Wetherspoons duly converted a former dairy into this capacious boozer in 2015.  Open from 8am and serving breakfast until 11:30, this is a wallet-friendly addition to the Muswell Hill drinking and dining scene.

Ordering your food and drink

These days, the QR code on the table reminds us that we’re either eating out in the 2020s or that Covid is still with us.  It’s quite easy to socially distance if you don’t need to leave your table to go stand at the bar to order.  I started down the order-from-phone route but ground to a halt when I became confused as to whether drink was included.  Then had a brainwave – I can ask at the bar like in the olden days!  Nice server confirmed drink not included in the Traditional Breakfast (£3.95)  so paid an extra 99p for bottomless coffee.   I also thought I may need to go to the bar to collect my mug.  To the drinks bar!  There were plenty of options, so as I was planning to settle in for the morning (had laptop in hand), I went for the first of many decaf flat whites.

The Breakfast

Laptop had hardly booted up before the breakfast arrived on a very hot plate.  First things first – get that butter spread while the toast was still warm enough to melt it.  For a breakfast that wasn’t the largest on offer, (that honour goes to the “Large Breakfast” (£5.35)) 2 hash browns seemed generous.  Two slices of bacon also reasonable.  With beans a-plenty plus a modest sausage, this English breakfast hit the spot.  Vegetarians/vegans also seem to be catered for OK as there are a number of options where veggie staples such as quorn was the substitute for some of the meatier items.  There’s also various muffin options that will give the McDonalds breakfast fans something to come in for.

The Wifi situation

With no dedicated WIFI of their own, I was pointed to “_The Cloud” wifi.  I’m no security expert but as this sounded like a rather insecure network, I opted to use the my phone as a hotspot instead.  As this is another Wetherspoons pub that seems to have been converted from a large building, finding space in the daytime won’t to be an issue here.   I therefore felt quite comfortable spending a few hours here on my laptop.  While the wifi situation isn’t great and there doesn’t seem to be many power sockets in evidence, given the amount of space, I think I could work here for a morning and not feel unwelcome.
